The mechanism that moves the window up and down inside your vehicle's door is called a "window regulator" or "window lift mechanism". How the unit works is a function of its design
Cable Style Window Regulator Double Rail & Single Rail
Scissors Style Window Regulator
Single Arm Window Regulator
There are other types of regulators, but they are not used as widely as these four types.
Cable style window regulators most often stop working due to cable failure or cable guide failure. Often the glass is no longer supported by the cable system and falls to the down position. Pressing the window switch activates the window motor, but the window motor can't move the glass because the window regulator can't function any longer.
The typical cost, including parts, labor and sales taxes to replace an average window regulator ranges from $129 to $179. A few are less expensive and some are much more expensive depending on the make, model, and year of the vehicle.
